    New membrane is dry and must be conditioned (hydrated) before operation. The membrane will expand as it hydrates. During operation, the membrane will expand and contract depending on operating conditions of the stack. A well-designed MEA (membrane electrode assembly) will constrain the membrane (or CCM/catalyst coated membrane) in the x-y plane, but will allow it to swell in the z-direction as it hydrates. If the membrane/CCM is not constrained sufficiently in the MEA, it can pull back from the perimeter/edges and result in internal (transfer) leaks. The stack operating conditions should be designed to not dry the membrane too much or have many wet/dry cycles as this can stress the membrane.

    on my worst experience shrinkage will damage MEA, electrode will separate from the membrane.
