Humidifiers are required for the Nafion Membrane which conducts proton only when wet. Stacks such as HTPEM stacks working on PBI would not require a humidifier.

Humidifiers too are either active or passive. Active humidifiers allow the stack to be operated at much higher voltages and lower current densities.

Maintaining the proper humidity is very important in poly-mer electrolytic membrane. Because if it is not humidifier it will degrade the performance of the PEM.

Humidifiers are not required, for example, the Toyota Mirai (both I and II) do not have humidifiers. In order to avoid drying conditions the cell, stack, and fuel cell system must be designed to keep the membrane properly humidified. So not every stack requires a humidifier, but every stack requires humidification (from some method).
